Central California Travel Study (2022-2023)
The 2022 Central California Travel Study collected demographic and travel pattern information to better understand household travel behavior across California’s San Joaquin Valley region. Data collection occurred in two phases: April–June 2022 and January–March 2023.
The household travel study was conducted by Fresno Council of Governments in collaboration with:
- Kern Council of Governments
- Kings County Association of Governments
- Madera County Transportation Commission
- Merced County Association of Governments
- San Joaquin Council of Governments
- Stanislaus Council of Governments
- Tulare County Association of Governments
- California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)
- California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD)
In total, 7,406 households completed 19,084 daily surveys representing 150,012 trips across 42,567 person-days.
Study Design
The study consisted of two primary components:
- Household Survey: Collected information on household demographic characteristics and typical travel behaviors.
- Travel Diary: Collected detailed, day-to-day travel information for all members of participating households during a specified travel period.

Dataset Access
Survey data were processed and anonymized by the Transportation Secure Data Center (TSDC) at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) to ensure data quality and participant confidentiality.

Restricted Spatial Data:
To access latitude/longitude data and other restricted fields, users must apply for access to a secure portal environment through: Spatial Data from Transportation Studies and Surveys | Transportation Secure Data Center | NLR. Applicants must comply with all TSDC data use, confidentiality, and security requirements as part of the access approval process.
